Due to staffing issues, our minor injuries unit at Alnwick Infirmary will be closed on Wednesday, 30 October.

It will also close early at 2pm on Thursday, 31 October, and 5pm on Sunday, 3 November.

On all occasions, it will reopen the following day as usual at 7.45am.

The unit is open 7.45am to 8.30pm, seven days a week. 

The X-ray department opening times are Monday to Friday, 9am – 4pm, and weekends, 9am - 2pm.

What patients may need to know about the daily routine on the ward

The nurse-led unit is staffed by highly experienced emergency nurse practitioners.
Are children welcome? Yes, but the unit is unable to see those under 1.
What conditions does the unit treat?

The unit treats conditions such as:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Suspected broken bones
  • Cuts, grazes or suspected wound infections
  • Minor burns and scalds
  • Minor head injuries – where there has been no loss of consciousness or vomiting, if you are not taking any blood thinning medications, and there are no residual symptoms i.e. headache, nausea, visual disturbance, dizziness or any other symptoms of concussion.
  • Minor eye problems
  • Ear and throat infections
  • Insect and animal bites
  • Nose injuries and suspected broken nose
  • Removal of rings, earrings, and studs
  • Removal of foreign bodies from eyes, nose or ears
