How do you become a midwife?

Midwives support women and families throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period, caring for them during one of life's most significant experiences.

There are several routes into becoming a registered midwife:

  • BSc (Hons) Midwifery Degree: The most common route is a three-year undergraduate degree approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The programme combines academic study with extensive clinical placements across a range of maternity settings. Applications are made through UCAS, and entry requirements vary between universities. Previous experience in health or social care, whether through employment or voluntary work, can strengthen your application.
  • Shortened Midwifery Programme: Registered adult nurses can undertake an accelerated 18 to 24-month midwifery programme. Application routes vary between universities, so prospective applicants should check individual course requirements.
  • Midwifery Degree Apprenticeship: Available in England through selected universities and NHS employers, this route enables eligible maternity support workers to earn while they learn while gaining the same NMC-approved qualification as traditional university students.

Supporting your professional growth is central to the Northumbria Way.

Our structured development pathway enables newly qualified midwives to progress through preceptorship; develop the knowledge, confidence and clinical skills required to progress to Band 6, typically within 24 months.

During this programme, midwives rotate through the variety of maternity care settings while receiving preceptorship support; high-quality education, and personalised clinical support to help develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to thrive throughout a progressive midwifery career.

Following the preceptorship period, all midwives benefit from using our Professional Passport, which offers personalised leadership, education and career development opportunities to support ongoing professional growth, enhance clinical expertise, and preparation for clinical leadership, management, specialist and advanced practice roles.
