Pathology

Welcome to pathology services at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The department is comprised of the following specialties:

• Clinical chemistry
• Microbiology
• Haematology
• Blood transfusion
• Histopathology
• Mortuary services
• Toxicology
• Point of care testing

Analytical laboratory services are provided at four trust locations including The Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital and North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham general hospitals.

The departments also refer specialised tests by arrangement to relevant reference centres.

Toxicology service

The department is a reference centre for specialised tests in the northern region.

Our aim is to provide an accessible and comprehensive diagnostic support service to both hospital, primary care clinicians, coroners and forensic testing.

Laboratory services are accredited to ISO15189:2012 as assessed by UKAS and further details of accreditation including the scope of work can be found here.

The mortuary services are licenced by the human tissue authority (HTA) – Licence number 12261

The Blood transfusion service is licenced by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) – Licence number 17861/12446749

There is a GP phlebotomy service for patients who are difficult to bleed requiring blood tests offered at North Tyneside General hospital, directions here. Opening hours are 8am until 11:30am, Monday to Friday as a drop-in session.
