Welcome to the webpage for the knee team in our orthopaedics department.

We are proud to be the highest volume joint replacement unit in the UK. We have outcomes among some of the best in the country.

We aim to provide the highest quality assessment and surgery for our patients.

We have a large team of knee specialists with a range of interests. We are able to manage a large range of complex knee problems.

  • Knee pain
  • Knee instability
  • Knee locking
  • Kneecap dislocation
  • Problems or infection following a previous knee replacement

If you have a long-standing knee problem, we will usually get a referral from the phyiostherapy team. This follows a referral from your GP.

If you have a new significant knee injury, we will usually get a referral from one of our urgent treatment centres.

  • Arthroscopic (keyhole) knee surgery
  • Cartilage repair procedures
  • Kneecap surgery (MPFL ligament reconstruction / tibial tubercle osteotomy / trochleoplasty / patella tendinopathy surgery)
  • Ligament repair or reconstruction (ACL / MCL / PLC / PCL)
  • Meniscus (a pad of cartilage) repair or debridement
  • Osteotomy realignment procedures (high tibial / distal femoral / rotational osteotomy)
  • Partial knee replacement (medial, lateral and patellofemoral replacements)
  • Total knee replacement
  • Revision knee replacement - We are the Major Revision Centre for the North East

We have both surgeon, specialist physio or nurse-led clinics.

We will try to see you at the hospital closest to your home. Sometimes this means travelling to a hospital that is not your local hospital if you have a condition that requires specialist skills or the wait time is shorter elsewhere.

Please try to wear shorts or clothes that will let us look at your knee comfortably when you come to your clinic appointment.

Sometimes further x-rays are required which we often do at the same clinic appointment. If an MRI or CT scan is needed, we will do this at a later visit.

If we offer you a surgical procedure, we will ask you to fill out details of your medical problems on our online system. This is so the anaesthetists can judge your fitness for surgery. Most patients will need an appointment with the pre-assessment nurses before surgery.

We will add you to your surgeon’s waiting list. Their secretary will phoe you to offer you a date for surgery closer to the operation. We may offer you a differnt surgeon if it means we can treat you more quickly.

Some surgeons offer post-op follow-up via phone. This will come from an external withheld number.

Many patients are discharged with patient initiated follow-up for a year. This means we don’t arrange another appointment, but if you have any problems during that time, you can contact us to arrange an appointment without a new referral.

We offer outpatient appointments and surgery across our main hospital sites:

Things that you can do to help with this include:

  • Do as much exercise as you can manage
  • Have a healthy BMI (body mass index). We discuss this with you if you need to reduce it before surgery.
  • Stop smoking. Help and support is available here.
  • Reduce your alcohol intake. Help and support is available here.
  • Make sure your long-term health conditions are under good control. Make sure you have attended your most recent checks for your conditions. Make sure you are taking your medications as directed.

More information on getting ready for surgery is available from the Get Set for Surgery website. It covers wellbeing, smoking, healthy eating, alcohol, pain management, exercise and sleep.
