I graduated from Imperial College in 2010 and spent the entirety of my orthopaedic training in the North East deanery. I took time to complete a PhD on infection prevention in hip fractures from the University of York and continue to be interested in research to prevent infection in hip and knee arthroplasty.
My specialist fellowship training was spent between the Golden Jubilee National Hospital and South Tees NHS Foundation Trust. The focus being on revision hip and knee surgery and high-volume use of robotics in primary hip and knee arthroplasty.
I am pleased to receive referrals for partial and total knee and total hip replacements. I also offer complex primary and revision hip and knee replacements and work as part of a wider multidisciplinary team to ensure the best quality of care for patients.

Mr Cloke trained in the Northern Deanery and Fellowship trained in shoulder and elbow surgery (Sheffield).
His specialist interests include arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery of the shoulder for rotator cuff problems, instability and frozen shoulder. He has experience in all surgical options for treatment of arthritis of the shoulder including total shoulder replacement and reverse replacement. In addition he has experience in total elbow replacement for arthritis. He was Northern Region Orthopaedic Trainer of the year 2014.
He is a member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society, previously on the Education committee.
He is a senior examiner for trainees at the end of their training (FRCS) and sits on the national Specialty Advisory Committee for training. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
He is a member of the Orthopaedic Device Evaluation Panel (ODEP) which rates the safety and reliability of shoulder and elbow joint replacements.
He was a member of the Army Reserve for 19 years including operational deployment.
Jonathan Coorsh is a consultant foot and ankle surgeon and the current lead for foot and ankle surgery in the trust.
He qualified from the University of London in 1988 and returned to the North East where he completed his orthopaedic training.
He has been a consultant since 2000, with a general foot and ankle practice.
He spent a year gaining further experience on a sabbatical in New Zealand.
Outside of work, he has a grown-up family and is a keen sports fan.
Mr Inman studied medicine at Bristol University and moved to the North East in 2001, undertaking higher surgical training in orthopaedics before embarking on fellowships in Edinburgh and Grenoble, France.
He has worked as a consultant at Northumbria since 2010.
He is mainly based at North Tyneside Hospital and the Northumbria hospital in Cramlington, but sometimes operates at Hexham and Wansbeck hospitals.
Mr Inman has special interests in hip and knee arthroplasty (joint replacement surgery), knee arthroscopy (keyhole surgery), knee realignment osteotomy for treatment of knee arthritis in young adults, complex extremity trauma (fracture) surgery including treatment of mal-unions and non-unions (fractures that haven’t healed with resultant ongoing pain or that have healed in an abnormal position affecting function).
He has chaired the trust’s Hip fracture care Quality improvement Steering group since 2012 and was the national Orthopaedic Clinical Lead of the National Hip Fracture Database at the Royal College of Physicians from 2019 to 2022. Northumbria treats around 700 patients with hip fractures a year, the largest centre of all the hospitals in the North East of England.

Mr Joseph specialises in hip arthroplasty, knee arthroplasty and knee arthroscopy (keyhole surgery). Mr. Joseph has clinical managerial responsibility for outpatient services in orthopaedics across Northumbria.
Mr Joseph has been a consultant with the trust since 2011. He studied medicine at Leeds University, qualifying in 1996, staying in the city to carry out basic surgical training and orthopaedic training. He obtained his fellowship in trauma and orthopaedic surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 2007.
He has undertaken higher specialist orthopaedic training in complex primary and revision hip and knee joint replacement surgery, hip arthroscopy and using computer navigation surgery for joint replacements for which he has fellowship experience from Leeds, York and Brisbane.
Mr Joseph is actively involved in education and is an associate clinical lecturer at Newcastle University teaching and training both undergraduate and postgraduate level. He is also a trainer for orthopaedic registrars and a supervisor for newly qualified doctors and nurse practitioners. Mr. Joseph is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons. Mr Joseph is Editor for Surgery for Elsevier ‘Crash Course’ series books for undergraduates preparing for Finals examinations.

Rajesh was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Northumbria Healthcare 2014. He specialises exclusively in foot and ankle disorders including sports injuries.
He studied medicine before gaining a post-graduation (Masters Degree) in Orthopaedics from the Mumbai University, India. He completed his MCh Orthopaedics degree from the University of Liverpool in 2006. He did his Higher Surgical Training in the Northern Deanery, gaining the FRCS (Orth) accreditation in 2012. He was fellowship trained in Bristol and Sheffield and was awarded a BOFAS Travelling fellowship to the Sigvard Hansen Foot and Ankle Unit, Seattle in 2014.
He is a Clinical and Educational Supervisor for the Orthopaedic Specialty Trainees and teaches in a variety of regional and national courses. He has served various national roles including BOFAS Education/Scientific committee member, National Orthopaedic Selection Design group member, National Orthopaedic SAC Quality Analysis lead. He is an examiner for the FRCS Trauma and Orthopaedic examinations.
Nick is a pure knee arthroplasty surgeon, and undertakes partial knee replacement (medial, lateral and patellofemoral), total knee replacement and revision knee replacement surgery.
Nick qualified from Manchester Medical School in 2012 having completed a PhD in tendon development at the Wellcome Centre for Cell Matrix Research, an international centre of excellence in matrix biology. Nick undertook Foundation Doctor training in North London at the Royal Free Hospital before moving to the North East in 2014 as an academic-clinical trainee in Orthopaedics. During this time he established an internationally recognised programme of research on knee stiffness and pain after knee replacement and continues to be research active in the area of problematic, painful and stiff knee replacement, publishing and speaking at national and international meetings regularly.
Nick completed orthoapedic training in Newcastle and Northumbria in 2022, before undertaking fellowships in the Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit at the Princess Ellizabeth Orthopaedic Centre (2023-2024) with Professor Andy Toms and Mr John Phillips. In Exeter Nick was trained in primary arthroplasty, including robotic arthroplasty, undertaking more than 100 robotic cases, and gaining MAKO (robotic knee) certification, and in revision knee arthroplasty (both infected and aseptic revision). From Exeter Nick moved to the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre (NOC) in Oxford (2023-2024), a world centre of excellence in infection management and pioneers of partial (unicompartmental) knee replacement, where Nick was trained by Mr Abtin Alvand and Professor Andrew Price.
Nick returned to the North East as a consultant at Northumbria in April 2024. Nick is entirely focussed on primary (first time) and re-do (revision) surgery, in particular partial knee replacement. Nick undertakes a high volume of first time and revision surgery (more than 250 cases per year, including >100 partial knee replacements). Nick is heavily involved with the national programme of Revision Knee Networks, which has transformed revision knee surgery across England, through development of Major Revision Centres, where the most complex revision knee surgery is now concentrated. NHCT is a Major Revision Centre in the NE of England. Nick is a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) Executive Committee, and faculty for the BASK National MRC Instructional Course, which is held annually and recommended training for all surgeons in England undertaking revision knee surgery.
Nick works closely with the NHCT MRC team, including Nicola Sinclair (revision clinical specialist) and Laura Doyle (regional network multidisciplinary team coordinator) to develop the regional revision network and improve care for patients with problematic, infected or failed knee replacements. This work often is undertaken with expert plastic surgeons at NHCT, and the Bone Infection Unit, to care for patients with complex infection following knee replacement.
Nick is pleased to receive referrals for any patient with degenerative knee disease and any patient with problematic knee replacements, and runs clinics at North Tyneside, Wansbeck, Cramlington and Hexham.
I am a fellowship trained consultant hand and wrist surgeon. I graduated from Dundee University and intercalated in anatomy and human biology at King's College London.
I trained in orthopaedics in the North East and within the plastic surgery hand unit in Leeds during fellowship. I am experienced in hand trauma and was part of the Leeds Hand Transplant Team for over four years. I manage elective and traumatic hand and wrist conditions, and I am part of the general trauma on-call team.
I am the chairwoman of the UK Hand Registry and Clinical Audit Committee within the British Society of Surgery of the Hand (BSSH).
I set up the first hand and wrist Orthopaedic Data Evaluation Panel (ODEP) subgroup.
I enjoy teaching and hold a medical education role with Sunderland University and Newcastle Medical school.
I recently joined the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) Training the Trainers Faculty.
Ajay Malviya has been a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Northumbria Healthcare since 2011. He specialises in conditions affecting the young adult hip and has expertise in periacetabular osteotomy for hip dysplasia, utilizing a minimally invasive approach and hip arthroscopy.
Prof Malviya has a significant tertiary referral practice and is among the highest-volume hip preservation surgeons in the UK. In his routine practice, he addresses sports injuries of the hip and has extensively published and presented findings on the results of hip arthroscopy and pelvic osteotomy, both in athletes and the general population. He has also completed a PhD focused on the role of hip arthroscopy in femoroacetabular impingement.
Prof Malviya serves as a trustee and elected council member of the British Orthopaedic Association, treasurer of the British Hip Society, and is a trustee and past chairman of the UK Non-Arthroplasty Hip Registry, which collects outcomes on hip preservation procedures performed in the UK and leads research initiatives from the registry.
Additionally, he is the deputy editor of the Journal of Hip Preservation Surgery (Oxford University Press) and the associate editor of the Journal of Orthopaedics. He is also on the editorial board of the American Journal of Sports Medicine.
With an active interest in research, Prof Malviya has authored over 125 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He lectures nationally and internationally and chairs the ISHA (International Hip Preservation Society) Research Committee. In 2016, he received the prestigious ABC (America-Britain-Canada) fellowship, which allowed him to travel across North America and visit several high-profile centres.
In terms of training, Prof Malviya is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS T&O) and serves as the Vice-Chair of the BOA Education and Careers Committee. He has been the national lead for the UK and Ireland orthopaedic in-training examination (UKITE) for nearly 10 years. His fellowship has trained consultants who are now practicing in various regions across the country.

Miss Morrell started her consultant career at Northumbria in 2023. She completed her medical training at Newcastle University and went on to complete her higher orthopaedic training within the Northern rotation. Following this, she was appointed a prestigious nationally appointed fellowship in orthoplastic hand and wrist surgery at Newcastle Hospitals, following which she spent a further fellowship year in Australia in a specialist hand unit.
Miss Morrell sees all hand and wrist conditions both electively and within her trauma role. She has a particular interest in scaphoid fractures, thumb base replacements and Dupuytren’s surgery. She sees patients in North Tyneside, Wansbeck and also operates at Morpeth and Alnwick.
Miss Morrell has a role with Newcastle University coordinating the medical students and regular teaches on the nurse practitioner courses. She has been developing the hand trauma provision within the trust, including most recently expanding the service to include hand therapy. She is an active member of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand and the North East Network branch of this. She has a role within the OrthNorth Teaching and Education Association leading on the lecture programme and running the annual mock exam.
Rory Morrison specialises in knee surgery, including total and partial knee replacement, soft-tissue knee surgery (ligaments, cartilage, meniscus), patellofemoral surgery (kneecap instability and pain) and osteotomy (realignment surgery).
His surgical training was in the North-East of England, followed by a one-year fellowship in knee surgery at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre in Exeter. He returned to Northumbria in September 2024 and sees patients at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Morpeth.
He has a PhD through the University of Newcastle and was a previous Royal College of Surgeons Research Fellow. He has published his research and presented at national and international meetings.
I was born, educated and trained in the North East, and have worked as a consultant in Northumbria since 2006 as a lower limb surgeon with particular interest in soft tissue knee surgery. I do clinics in Wansbeck and Morpeth and operate at all main sites as well as Alnwick. I also am part of the orthopaedic trauma team.
Particular areas of interest include unicompartment knee replacement, total knee replacement and soft tissue knee surgery including ligament reconstruction.
I also have an interest in quality improvement, management and service delivery design.
Trained in the Northern Deanery and then 1 year Hip and Knee replacement and revision (re-do joint replacement) Fellowship training in Canada. Appointed as Consultant in Northumbria in 1998.
Was the first surgeon to perform a day-case hip or knee replacement in the UK in 2015. Now very experienced surgeon who has performed more than 4,500 hip and knee replacements and 850 revision hip and knee replacements. Specialist interest in complex primary (first time) hip and knee replacement and revision hip and knee replacement.

Mr Petheram is a high-volume hip / knee surgeon with a specialist interest in complex hip and knee replacement and revision (re-do).
He undertook fellowship in the Exeter Hip unit and has visited the USA on a prestigious travelling fellowship.
He is on the executive of the British Hip Society, Bone & Joint Infection Society, and leads the Bone & Joint Infection Registry. He received National recognition as National Trainer of the Year in 2023.
He has published scientific papers, attends meetings across the world, often as faculty, and has led research in Northumbria, such as RACER Hip robotic project.
I grew up in the North East, undergraduate training in Cambridge, post-graduate in East Anglia, then research in Nottingham, senior training in the North East with fellowships in Melbourne.
I deal with all aspects of hand and wrist surgery and I have a special interest in complex wrist reconstruction. I see patients at North Tyneside and while on call at NSECH.

Professor Mike Reed is a full-time trauma and hip and knee joint replacement surgeon. He trained in the North of England and did fellowships in New Zealand.
He leads trauma and orthopaedics at Northumbria, working with a team of 31 talented colleagues.
His research focuses on clinical outcomes particularly around short stay surgery as well as infection prevention, diagnosis and management.
Professor Reed is on the steering committee and executive of the National Joint Registry (NJR) and Chaired the Annual Report from 2019-2024. He now leads on Surgical Performance for the NJR, is a trustee for the Orthopaedic Research UK charity and is on the grant awards committee for the National Institute Health and Care Research (NIHR) (i4i PDA). He leads clinical trials for industry and NIHR, and works academically with the University of York.
I was appointed in 2010 and work predominantly at the North Tyneside site. I trained in the North East and undertook a specialist fellowship in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery in Vancouver, Canada. I am a Visiting Professor at Northumbria University, Clinical Director of Research and Development and Chair of the British Foot and Ankle Orthopaedic Society Scientific Committee.
I have a particular interest in ankle arthritis, including ankle replacement and revision ankle replacement, corrective forefoot surgery, minimally invasive techniques and sports injuries.

Helen is experienced in knee cartilage, meniscus and ligament repair and reconstruction, osteotomy realignment surgery and the management of early and advanced osteoarthritis including partial and total knee replacement.
She has particular experience in treating adolescent and young adult knee problems and aims to help patients repair and restore their native knee joint wherever advisable, aiming for excellent knee function in the long term. She has special expertise in the treatment of kneecap conditions including dislocation.
Helen completed specialist knee fellowship training in Bristol and Coventry. She became a consultant and trainer in 2021. Clinics are in Wansbeck and Hexham Hospitals.
