Roadworks by the Northumbria hospital site - starting Monday, 12 February

Patients and visitors coming to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington are being warned about roadworks taking place close to the site.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is currently building a new facility on the site. This Health and Care Academy is a key development to support the training, education, retention and recruitment of healthcare staff. It will be the only facility of its kind in the region and just the second nationally.

As part of the planning permission, which was granted approval in late 2021, some highway improvement works need to be carried out to upgrade the B1505/B1326 junction as well as the roundabout on the B1326 at the entrance to the NSECH site.

Details of the works

On Monday, 12 February, work will start at the B1505/B1326 junction. Temporary traffic lights will be in place 24 hours a day, but they will be manned from 7am to 9.30am and from 4.30pm to 7.30pm, Monday to Friday.

This phase of works will last around 7 weeks. Work will then move to the roundabout on the B1326, at the entrance to the NSECH site. Further details of this phase will be confirmed at a later date.

The works are planned to take a total of 10 weeks.

Access to the hospital for ambulances and other emergency vehicles is the trust's main priority and it will be monitoring the situation carefully.

The trust also appreciates that the work will have an impact on the local community. The contractors have issued advance notice of the works, but the trust apologises for any disruption and would like to reassure residents that everything will be done to keep this to a minimum.

Additional works - week commencing 19 February

Roadworks will be taking place by the entrance of the Northumbria hospital site. They will last four days, from Monday to Thursday, 19 to 22 February.

This means there will be temporary traffic lights in place on the B1326 roundabout. The routes affected include the southbound slip-road off the A189.

While this work is taking place, the temporary traffic lights at the nearby B1505/B1326 T-junction will be suspended and the work there halted. This junction will revert to the usual traffic light control.

The work will be taking place from 7.30pm to 6am each day. Any noisy work will not take place after 11pm.
