A flow rate test is a test of the rate and amount of urine (wee) that you pass. It looks at changes to your usual flow of urine. We will ask you to come to a flow clinic if you have symptoms that suggest you may have a blockage.

You will have to wee into a special toilet in a private room. The results are recorded and printed outside the room. You will also have a simple scan of your bladder before and after the test. This is to check if your bladder has emptied.

You can eat and drink as normal before you arrive for the test. Your bladder should be comfortably full for the test.

If you can’t travel with a full bladder then you can drink here to fill it up. You can arrive early for your appointment to do that if needed. Please be aware it may take up to 2 hours for your bladder to fill up.

Please do not use the toilet before you are seen.

Please let us know in advance if you have any mobility issues.

It records the volume of urine (wee) in your bladder. You will lie down on a couch and the scan will take place on your lower stomach area. This will show the amount of urine left in your bladder.

The flow rate test will show us how well you are emptying your bladder and the rate of flow. This helps to decide the most appropriate treatment. You may need further tests.

There are no side-effects or risks involved with this test. You can go back to normal activities straight after.

We can’t say how long it will take to complete the test. It will depend on when your bladder is full enough to do the test properly. Ideally, you should have a minimum of 200mls in your bladder to go ahead with the test.

Please be prepared to wait if you are not ready straight away. You may want to bring something help pass the time, like a book or magazine.

You can go back to normal activities after the test. Your healthcare professional will review the results and make a plan.
