How can podiatry help me?
Rheumatology conditions / arthritis affect joints and muscles. Our feet can absorb up to six times our bodyweight with every step. It is important to protect vulnerable foot joints.
Rheumatology conditions which can impact the foot include:
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Psoriatic arthritis
- Axial spondyloarthritis
- Gout
- Systemic sclerosis
Podiatry teams help people of all ages with problems that affect their feet or legs.
Our rheumatology podiatrists can help to minimise the impact of a rheumatological condition on your feet. They do this with:
- Joint protection
- Footwear and footcare advice
- Exercises
- Supportive orthoses (insoles)
- Working with the wider rheumatology team to improve health and wellbeing
We see patients who are under the care of a consultant rheumatologist. Your consultant or members of the wider rheumatology team can refer you.
If you can’t attend an appointment, please get in touch. This means we can offer the appointment to someone else.
If you miss your appointments, we may have to discharge you from podiatry.
Call the appointment line on 0344 811 8118.
We will assess your condition. We will agree the right course of treatment for you. This may include:
- Foot health and footwear advice
- Supply of orthotics (insoles)
- An ultrasound scan to help diagnosis
- Exercises
- Referral for specialist footwear
- Referral to podiatric surgery
We will talk to you about what is important to you. We can work with you to improve your foot health and function. We involve you every step of the way.
When you come to your appointment, please bring the footwear you wear most. This should include an enclosed, fastened shoe.
