Our local hospitals have again been rated among the best in the country based despite the challenges facing the health and care system during the pandemic.

Northumbria Healthcare, which is one of the only organisations in the country to be rated twice Outstanding by the independent healthcare regulator, has featured in two prominent publications this month.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust was rated 2nd in the country in the Top100 hospitals Health Check by Public View.

The poll compared and ranked the latest published NHS data for 123 hospitals in March 2021 to give a Hospital Combined Performance Score’ (HCPS).

This score is made up of 10 key performance indicators spanning a number of quality, operational, finance and workforce criteria.

In addition, The World’s Best Hospital’s 2021 produced by NewsWeek and Statista   included 4 Northumbria hospitals in the UK rankings.

Wansbeck, Hexham, North Tyneside and the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital all featured in the top 80 UK hospitals list published last week.

The global list has been developed to highlight hospitals that stand out for their consistent excellence, including distinguished physicians, top-notch nursing care and state-of-the-art technology.

Sir James Mackey, chief executive of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “To be recognised in this way whilst fighting a global pandemic is such a huge achievement and is a credit to the hard work, fortitude and compassion of all our staff. I’d like to say a huge well done to everyone working across Northumbria whatever their role.

“These types of rankings show that our patients can still be confident about the high-quality care available in the health services of Northumberland and North Tyneside. This has been a particularly difficult year for everyone but it’s pleasing to see our hospitals being rated so highly.

“In Northumbria we are never complacent and will always seek to improve our standards and practice even more, which is why we have committed to some really exciting investment in the coming years.

“Things like the planned new hospital in Berwick, our investment in new operating theatres, a state-of-the-art sterilisation facility and our expanding PPE factory will all stand us in great stead for the years to come.”
