Hospital chaplain helps bring wedding blessing to grandmother’s bedside

A couple from North Tyneside were able to share a special wedding blessing with their grandmother thanks to the dedication of a hospital chaplain and staff at North Tyneside General Hospital who helped bring the family together in the palliative care unit.
When Sophie and Jordan realised that Sophie’s grandmother, Pat, who is receiving end-of-life care, would be unable to attend their wedding, they were determined to find a way to include her in their celebrations. With the support of hospital chaplain Lloyd Brown and staff on the palliative care unit, a heartfelt blessing was arranged at Pat’s bedside, creating a treasured memory for the whole family.
The intimate ceremony gave Pat the opportunity to witness and take part in an important milestone in Sophie and Jordan’s lives, surrounded by her loved ones.
Lloyd worked closely with the family and ward staff to organise the blessing, ensuring it reflected the couple’s wishes while creating a meaningful and memorable occasion for everyone involved.
Hospital chaplains play a vital role in supporting the wellbeing of patients, their families and colleagues, offering comfort, guidance and compassionate support during some of life’s most significant moments.
Lloyd said: “It was a privilege to help make this special blessing possible for Sophie, Jordan and their family. Being able to bring the ceremony to Pat’s bedside meant she could share in their celebration and be part of a moment that was so important to them all.
“Chaplaincy is about supporting people through life’s most important moments, whether they are joyful, challenging, or a mixture of both. This blessing was a wonderful example of compassionate, person-centred care and what can be achieved when teams come together to support what matters most to patients and their loved ones.”
The family expressed their heartfelt thanks to the chaplaincy and ward teams for making the blessing possible and giving them a moment they will cherish forever.
Sophie said: “It was so important to us that our grandmother could be part of this milestone. The blessing gave us the chance to celebrate together and create a precious memory at a time when every moment feels even more meaningful.
“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make it happen. It brought our family so much comfort, joy and happiness, and it’s a memory we will treasure forever.”
