Hexham General Hospital nurse celebrates 50 years of NHS service

This year marks an incredible milestone for one of our colleagues at Hexham General Hospital, who is celebrating 50 years since beginning her nursing career.
In June 1976, Lorraine started her nurse training at Hexham General Hospital, taking the first steps on what would become an extraordinary career spanning five decades, several countries and countless lives touched.
After qualifying, she completed specialist training in the care of sick and premature babies at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital before returning to Newcastle to work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Newcastle General Hospital. Her passion and expertise in neonatal care then took her overseas, where she spent three years working as a senior nurse in Saudi Arabia. During her time in the Middle East, she also married and welcomed her first child in Abu Dhabi, while maintaining her UK nursing registration.

On returning to England, she worked across a variety of nursing roles through the nurse bank before joining Northumbria Healthcare as a bank community nurse. Her commitment to learning saw her complete a degree in Community Health Sciences, progressing to become a District Nursing Sister and later a Matron, serving the Prudhoe community for many years.
She was also among the early cohort of nurses to qualify as an independent nurse prescriber, helping to shape the evolving role of community nursing.
More recently, she transferred back to Hexham General Hospital, bringing with her a wealth of experience and an unwavering commitment to patient care.
Her passion for nursing has extended far beyond the North East. She has worked internationally in Tanzania with Northumbria Healthcare and while travelling in Nepal, volunteered her time to provide health education and advice to villagers living in remote communities.

Reflecting on her career, she said:
"I have enjoyed every moment of my career. I have met some incredible people who have left me with fond and lasting memories. I have been inspired by the warmth, humility and courage of patients, families and staff throughout my journey. It has been an honour and privilege to work in the nursing profession for as long as I have, and I hope I can continue for a while longer. Thank you to everyone who has been part of my incredible professional journey.“
Everyone at Northumbria Healthcare would like to congratulate Lorraine on reaching this remarkable milestone. Her compassion and commitment over the past 50 years is an inspiration to colleagues past and present, and a wonderful reminder of the difference nurses make every single day.
