Meet our Child Health Carer Team
We are a small team of four – Corrin, Rosanna, Lindsey and Katherine. We work within the community covering Northumberland and North Tyneside but based at Wansbeck child health centre and we work within the children’s community nursing team. Our role is a special one and one that we feel very privileged to do. We provide respite provision to children with disabilities aged 0-18 years.
Our day to day
Our days and respite sessions looks different every day and for every child based on level of need and various other factors. Before each visit we must consider whether the child has an emergency health care plan (EHCP), an epilepsy plan – this may include rescue meds, they may have feeding plans, and or reduced mobility which comes with moving and handling plans and unfortunately at times our children may be on end-of-life care. All these factors affect how we provide respite so it is a personalised approach to each specific child. We may be providing care within the family home, or we could be out exploring the environment and local community, and at times our respite may also cover hospital stays.
Wherever we are we aim to provide safe and quality care to the families whilst brining joy to children’s lives. We bring a bag of resources along with us which include engaging and stimulating activities for the children to enjoy whilst in our care. During our visits it gives parents/caregivers a chance to switch off from daily life of being a medical parent and do something for themselves, this may be taking a nap, going to the gym or catching up on errands. Whatever it is that the parents choose to do in our visit they can do so knowing we are trained in caring for their child.
Our Passion
As a team, the part of the job we enjoy most is providing the children with new opportunities and seeing them smile. We aim to bring sunshine wherever we will go, and we feel like our bubbly personalities match our roles.
We all feel honoured to be such an important part of these children’s lives, yes we provide respite and give the families a break but for some of these children we may be the only different faces they see – and to bring joy whilst we do this, makes us feel proud and so passionate about out roles – which many will not even know exists.
It is so important to us that we continue to deliver compassion and empathy, supporting the families through their most challenging times in life. We strive to support parents’ mental health whilst offering a unique session for the children. Without the expertise and knowledge of the children’s community nurses we would not be able to fulfil this role, we rely heavily on the team to keep us up to date with the most relevant training which enables us to deliver such high-quality care to the children with such a range of complex medical needs.
Every visit is different but our aim is always the same – to provide high-quality care while bringing joy, comfort and rainbows into the lives of the children and families we support.
