About us
We are here to help people aged 18 + who live in North Tyneside and are registered with a North Tyneside GP.
We provide evidence based psychological treatment for anyone experiencing a common mental health condition that impacts on their daily life. These may include stress, depression, anxiety, panic, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress.
We can also provide specialist support for people with long term conditions such as COPD, heart disease and diabetes to help with anxiety and/or depression related to this.
Our Talking Therapies service is for patients who are registered with a North Tyneside GP practice. We are based at Hadrian Health Centre in Wallsend. This is where we offer most face to face appointments.
We have limited venues in North Shields, Whitley Bay and Longbenton based on specific needs. Our staff offer a range of remote appointments via telephone and video. These take place during our opening times.
What we do
Talking Therapies provides NICE-recommended psychological therapies, at low and high intensities. The course and intensity of treatment will be determined through an assessment of a person’s presenting needs, in line with NICE guidelines.
We have a range of interventions available both in one-to-one and group formats, alongside a remote offering so people can access from their home or in person.
Patients may receive the following treatments:
We offer a wide range of psychological and educational groups and courses to help with a number of common difficulties. Groups and courses can be offered at both low and high intensity.
Engaging in groups and courses will help patients to:
- Learn more about common symptoms and how they affect them.
- Learn effective coping strategies to help to improve their wellbeing.
- Cope better with any future difficulties and be well prepared for any future treatment.
All of our courses are delivered by qualified therapists. They are run like a lecture so there is no pressure for patients to contribute or discuss their difficulties with the rest of the group. We offer groups and courses at a range of locations across North Tyneside. They are free of charge to anybody over the age of 18 registered with a North Tyneside GP.
We will need to understand patients' current difficulties.
What to expect
Groups and courses are usually between 4 to 8 sessions for each group and each session usually lasts 2 hours. Regular attendance is needed to maximise understanding the content and to apply strategies outside of sessions. Participants can share if they choose to but this is not compulsory. This can be discussed with the course facilitators ahead of the group. Group delivery brings an additional opportunity to learn from others and access peer support.
Our online cognitive behavioural therapy programme is available on computer, tablet or mobile phone.
The idea of this programme is that patients can work at their own pace, with regular reviews from your therapist who can help to guide and motivate them through the programme. It consists of evidence-based techniques based on CBT which are recognised to have a positive impact on low mood and anxiety.
It is available 24-7 in patients' own time, at their own pace, and is very flexible and easy to use – however, we will always be there to support patients if they need us. It is tailored to their needs and aims to help by providing information as well as tools and activities to help improve low mood and anxiety including video clips, interactive quizzes, a journal and audio guided exercises.
How do patients access online therapy?
Patients will be given a login to access online therapy and also allocated a therapist who will support and guide them through their individual care package.
On some occasions we may also offer online therapy as an unsupported package of care while patients wait to start therapy, if we think this would help them prior to commencing therapy.
Courses available
The different courses that may be suggested to patients can be found on the patient information page.
Guided self-help is delivered by our psychological wellbeing practitioners as a low-intensity intervention to help people to manage a variety of difficulties including low mood, lack of motivation, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic and stress. After an initial face-to-face appointment, the practitioner will provide patients with some workbooks that teach skills and techniques to improve their mood.
Regular calls from the practitioner will allow patients to discuss what they’ve been learning, help them set goals and keep track of progress.
Some patients might need additional support and may go on to receive one of the following talking therapies.
- Low intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- High intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)
- Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Low intensity counselling
- Counselling for Depression (CfD)
- Psychological Therapies for long-term health conditions
