The North East & North Cumbria have been rated #1 overall for training and education in the GMC National Training Survey.

The GMC National Training Survey runs every year to assess the experiences of trainers and doctors in training across the UK. It’s hosted by the General Medical Council, and it monitors and reports the quality of postgraduate medical education and training.

The North East & North Cumbria were rated #1 in 7 out of the 18 long-standing indicators which the GMC uses to evaluate training, and #2 in 3 of the other indicators.

Andrea Myers, director of medical education and consultant rheumatologist at Northumbria Healthcare, said:

“As a trust and as a region, we are very grateful for the feedback we have been given in the latest GMC survey. The feedback is fantastic. It not only shows the dedication of clinical teachers and supervisors across the trust, but also the hard work of our doctors in training.

“We really strive to be the best place to work and train and we take all comments we receive on board. This helps us to develop, innovate and make improvements regarding what training we can provide.

“Within Northumbria Healthcare we provide clinical training for doctors in training across 27 specialities. We always try to provide unique placements that are not offered elsewhere in the North East and Cumbria. For example, we have innovative posts in public health and in sustainability.

“When doctors in training are placed with us, we have dedicated education leads to help facilitate their placements. They work closely with the medical education team to ensure that all our placements provide the best experience and training possible.”

Andrea has worked in medical education for 20 years, working as the director of medical education for the past 4 years. This role involves the strategic vision and ongoing quality assurance of all undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in the trust.

She said: “I truly love my job – it’s a fantastic role and varies in activity on a day-to-day basis. My colleagues make it very easy for me to come in every day. We have an amazing group of open-minded and talented people who are all dedicated to providing the best education and training possible.

“Northumbria, and the wider North East, is a fantastic place to live. I would hope that our high quality of training will show our doctors in training what a fulfilling future career they can have with us as they progress through their medical career.”
