To celebrate national T Levels week, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is reflecting on its own journey supporting young people through the technical qualification.

T Levels are an alternative educational route for 16–19 year olds that combines classroom-based learning with industry placements to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to support them either in further study or skilled employment. T Levels a level three qualification, equivalent to three A Levels, and are tailored to specific industries such as health and science, engineering, finance, and digital.

Completing 315 hours of industry placement is a requirement for those studying a T Level and Northumbria has supported students on T Level Health and T Level Engineering courses by offering placements to provide valuable, practical experience and exposure to the range of careers and pathways available.

Students are able to use their academic learning in a real workplace environment where they are enhancing their skills and gaining confidence in their abilities for a successful career in the NHS.

Following completion of a T Level, Northumbria offers various career pathways to support further professional development, employment and career progression.

Through the T Level placement offer, the trust is investing in the next generation of workforce which is a key aspect of its community promise. By welcoming young students, the trust benefits from a new perspective and is encouraged to continue its innovation within education to help those in the community seeking employment to gain the skills needed for their chosen career.

Ruth Auton, head of education, learning and organisational development, said: “It’s vital that we are able to support young people who are looking for a career in the NHS and through our T Level placement offer, we can build those relationships and support their personal and professional development.

“Exposure to what it’s like to work for Northumbria can encourage students to continue on their chosen career path and consider the trust as a place to work and continue their learning to fulfil their career ambitions.”

Currently the trust offers placements to support T Level Health and T Level Engineering but is looking to expand into other areas such as digital, media and finance in the near future.
