Movember – How social and physical activity helped Steve get through hard times

As part of Men’s Health Month, Parkinson’s nurse specialist, Steve Dodds, shares how social and physical activities has helped with his mental and physical health.

The importance of Men’s Health Month and healthPic - Steve Dodds.jpg and wellbeing in general

I think that Men’s Health Month is important as men continue to not seek help with health problems both from a physical and mental health point of view.

Further to this suicide continues to be higher in men than in women. In 2023, the rate for suicide was three times higher in men than in women.

Overcoming tough times through socialising and exercise

Late in 2019 my wife was diagnosed with cancer and had surgery just prior to the coronavirus pandemic.

Unfortunately, she also needed to have chemotherapy, and this started just after we all went into lockdown. This was a very worrying time for us all, especially with the added concern of an unknown virus which could have catastrophic effects if let into our home.

I struggled for a while mentally. But when restrictions were relaxed and we were able to meet outside, I was able to go out again with the running group I have been involved with for several years.

This proved to be hugely beneficial and incredibly supportive.

Not only did I feel the benefits physically with the endorphins which come from exercising but also mentally where my running buddies provided a distraction to what was happening at home. They also listened to my concerns and offered support as necessary.

These times strengthened the bonds I have with the group, and they are still immensely supportive in general now as well as great friends.

How I take care of my health and wellbeing and the impact of it

I train with and compete for North Shields Polytechnic running club. I specialise in sprinting and running distances from 60m to 400m.

I do this 3-4 times per week as and when life allows this and as I say I get benefits from this both physically and mentally.

Why I am speaking out about this

I wanted to share my experience to give an example of how exercise can hugely help our social, mental and physical health and wellbeing.

The support I have received proved incredibly helpful to me and I hope this may encourage other people to consider taking up running or another sport to help their own health.
