Results
When you order your Home Testing Kit or are tested in clinic, we will ask for your contact preferences for results. The options to receive results are:
- Text Message (18+ only and excludes positive results for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis and HIV).
- Phone Call
- Letter (£50 charge and must be collected in person)
You will receive your STI results within 10 working days of the test.
Please do not contact the service to ask for your results unless it has been 10 working days.
If you have chosen to receive your results by text, the message will look something like this, depending on the type of test you have taken and the result:
Example Negative Text: Your recent test results are negative. NHCFT
Example Positive Text: Your urine sample taken on 00/00/0000 is positive for Chlamydia. All other test results are negative (clear). Click this link http://bit.ly/XXXXXXX for next steps. You will get another text soon to send to people you have had sex with. NHFT
If you have chosen to receive your results by phone call, our number will be displayed as Anonymous/Unknown/No Caller ID.

Please make sure to avoid sexual contact with others until you have completed your treatment.
Telling your sexual partners about the positive results
If you have a positive STI result, it is very important to tell those who you have had recent sexual contact with. We call this Partner Notification.
You will be informed of the time period, as often you will need to let people know who you have had sexual contact with within the last few months.
We know it can be embarrassing to tell someone you have an STI. It’s important to know that STIs are common and can often have no symptoms. It is your decision to either:
- Tell your sexual partners yourself.
- Tell your sexual partners with support from our Health Advisors.
- Give your sexual partner’s contact details to our Health Advisors who can tell them for you (this will keep you completely anonymous if this is your preference).
Why do I need to tell them?
Partner Notification is very important for many reasons:
- Telling sexual partners so they can be tested and treated if needed, will stop you becoming re-infected from them. If you are treated, and continue to have sexual contact with someone who you had sex with whilst infected, it is likely you will catch the infection again if they have not been tested and treated.
- To prevent the infection continuing to spread. This is called ‘breaking the chain of infection’. If you do not tell recent sexual contacts about your positive result to allow them to be tested and treated if needed, they could unknowingly pass this on to other people.
- Being diagnosed and treated as early as possible helps to reduce the risk of any infection-related complications, such as fertility problems, pelvic inflammatory disease or further infections in the body.
Can my partner/s come to you for testing and treatment?
Yes, they can attend our clinic (either book an appointment or attend a walk-in), or they can order a Home Testing Kit (these kits are only available to residents of Northumberland & North Tyneside).
If they live outside of Northumberland or North Tyneside, they can also contact their local Sexual Health service for testing and treatment. All Sexual Health clinics are free and available to everyone, so they will be able to attend any clinic in England for testing and treatment.
