Update on new Berwick hospital
Good progress’ being made in planning/ development of new – standalone – hospital for Berwick
Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has today announced that ‘good progress’ is being made towards the construction of a new, standalone, hospital in Berwick.
In particular significant steps have been made towards identifying a new site. The trust is currently examining a wide range of options and has commenced commercial negotiations. Each option under consideration is focused on getting the best possible outcome for patients from the town and its surrounding area.
“We have taken the opportunity to reflect very seriously on the best way forward on what we heard from the local community during the listening events and would like to thank them for their feedback – it has been enormously helpful,” said Northumbria chief executive Jim Mackey.
“This engagement revealed a number of issues which we are determined to resolve. In particular, we want to make sure we respond to justified concerns around Berwick residents making journeys to our other sites for appointments which should be held at the current Berwick Infirmary site. As such, we will be offering more appointments at the Infirmary to residents and are conducting a review of the services hosted there to see how they can be better adapted/ structured to meet the town’s needs.
“The other major concern which we heard was that the proposed number (16) of regular in-patient beds would be insufficient. I am happy to say that – on reflection and as a result of community feedback – the number in any new hospital will be the same exist at present (20).”
Work on a new hospital location is also making strides.
“All of the (potential) sites are being thoroughly examined so as to ensure they can meet the needs of a growing town and a modern hospital. As soon as we are able to release more information – most likely in the New Year – we will do so.”
