Region’s newest maternity suite will offer best of both worlds

As midwives around the world celebrate International Day of the Midwife (Tuesday 5 May), midwives at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust have had their first glimpse of the stunning new Birthing Centre at the new Northumbria Hospital in Cramlington.

Set to open its doors to the public next month, mums-to-be from across Northumberland and North Tyneside will soon benefit from the state-of-the-art facility which will offer women and their partners the ultimate choice when it comes to deciding where to give birth.

The contemporary Birthing Centre @ Northumbria will include 14 ensuite delivery rooms, two ensuite birthing pool rooms, 20 individual ensuite bedrooms, each with its own TV and reclining chair for partners to stay overnight and all with access to restaurant facilities open 24/7 for meals and snacks.  There will also be specialist ‘Febromed’ equipment to help keep women both relaxed and mobile during labour and facilitate normal birth.

Northumbria’s highly-experienced midwifery team will be on hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week offering a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and home from home, natural birthing experience, all with the comfort of knowing a consultant obstetrician will always be available if required.

For women with high-risk pregnancies, unexpected complications, or who are experiencing difficulties during labour, a consultant obstetrician will be available 24 hours per day, seven days a week, with a dedicated maternity theatre, special care baby unit and neonatal resuscitation all within close proximity in the purposely-designed maternity suite.

Maternity services at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust are rated as some of the safest in England and as the team gears up for next month’s big move, Head of Midwifery Janice McNichol and Matron for Midwifery Julie Bennett have had their first peak at the fantastic new facilities.

“We are all very excited about what our new Birthing Centre @ Northumbria will offer local women.  Giving birth is a life-changing experience and our teams have designed a facility which means we can give a private and personalised experience for each and every family,” explains Janice.

Janice has practised as a midwife in the North East for over 30 years and spent the majority of her career with Northumbria.  She said: “Choice is very important when it comes to maternity care and making sure women have enough information to make informed decisions about the birth of their baby is really important to us.

“Giving birth is a natural life event and as a midwife I am passionate about midwifery-led care and giving our women a truly personalised approach and one-to-one support. We also know, however, that for some women and particularly those with high-risk pregnancies, complications can arise and having our consultant obstetricians on hand round the clock, really will offer the ultimate peace of mind for many families.”

Julie Bennett is Matron for Midwifery at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.  She said:  “It was great to finally get into the building with our midwifery team and have a first glimpse of the new Birthing Centre @ Northumbria.  It is looking fantastic, the facilities at Cramlington really are second to none and we can’t wait to move in.

“A new arrival in the family is a joyous time, but it can be daunting for new mums and families, particularly those experiencing it for the first time.  Our new Birthing Centre is ultimately about giving people choice – it will offer a very relaxed, safe and personal experience for everybody no matter whether you choose midwifery-led or consultant-led care.

Women from across Northumberland and North Tyneside will continue to receive their ante-natal care close to home and from hospitals in Alnwick, Berwick, Hexham, North Tyneside and Wansbeck.  For women choosing a free-standing midwifery-led birth they will also be able to book into midwifery-led units in Alnwick, Berwick and Hexham.

Pregnant women are now able to book at the new Birthing Centre @ Northumbria which will open for deliveries in June when the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital opens its doors. For more information contact 0344 811 811.
