We are rated as ‘outstanding’ by the independent health and social care regulator, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) - one of only four organisations nationally to receive this rating. We are the only trust so far to be rated ‘outstanding’ in four of the five areas measured – for being effective, caring, responsive and well-led, and good for safe.

The rating follows a rigorous process by the CQC in November 2015. A team of inspectors spent a week assessing our services observing how people were cared for, reviewing patients’ personal care or treatment records, holding focus groups with staff and talking to patients, carers and family members.

Before the inspection the CQC also reviewed information held by organisations including clinical commissioning groups, NHS England, Monitor, Health Education England and Healthwatch. They held listening events in local communities to hear people’s views about the care and treatment we provide and information from this was used to inform the inspection.

In total the CQC rated 20 core services at Northumbria as ‘outstanding’ – more than any other organisation previously inspected.

The Northumbria hospital, Wansbeck, North Tyneside and Hexham general hospitals, and our community services were also rated as 'outstanding'

The report identifies some areas for improvement, and through our continuous focus on quality, work is already underway to make the necessary improvements.
