Consultant Profile

Paul Partington

Consultant orthopaedic surgeon

Mr Partington specialises in hip and knee surgery, hip and knee joint replacement and revision, and knee arthroscopy.

Mr Partington has been a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the trust since 1998 following registrar training in the Northern Deanery and advanced training during a one year fellowship in lower limb arthroplasty in Ontario, Canada.

A highly experienced surgeon, Mr Partington performs around 200 primary hip and knee replacements, 40 revision joint replacements a year. Joint replacements are performed using the very successful fast track procedure which leads to shorter stays in hospital and quicker recovery times for patients. He was the first in the UK to perform a ‘day case’ hip replacement in 2015, that is the patient being safely discharged home on the day of the operation. Day case surgery is now common for hip and knee replacements in the Trust, and it is unusual for a patient to stay in hospital longer than one night after this surgery.

Mr Partington has taught both nationally and internationally on joint replacement. He is a former Training Programme Director and SAC Member in the Northern Deanery. He is also an examiner for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons on trauma and orthopaedics.

He is also a member of the British Hip Society and has been awarded an NHS National Clinical Excellence award for his work in both orthopaedic surgery and education and training.

Recent research interests include hip replacement surgery, techniques in revision hip surgery.
