Mrs Alice Townend
Consultant oncoplastic breast and general surgeon
Mrs Townend 's areas of speciality are the diagnosis and surgical management of benign and malignant breast disease, including breast reconstruction (implants and pedicle flaps), symmetrisation surgery (augmentation, reduction and mastopexy, and therapeutic mammoplasty.
After qualifying in medicine from Newcastle University in 1997, she completed general surgical training in the North East, which included extensive experience in oncoplastic breast surgery with rotations to all the main breast units in the region. Mrs Townend obtained her Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) from the Royal College of Edinburgh in 2015 and was appointed by Northumbria as a consultant oncoplastic breast and general surgeon in 2016.
Much of her higher surgical training was less than full-time (LTFT), which allowed her to balance her passion for breast surgery with bringing up a young family. She was one of the first trainees in the region to train in surgery in this way, and uses this experience in her role as LTFT lead on the Health Education England North-East School of Surgery Board.
Mrs Townend holds one-stop urgent breast clinics, breast reconstruction clinics and review clinics at North Tyneside and Hexham general hospitals.
