Mr M. Reza Kalbassi

Clinical lead and head of colorectal surgery service

Mr Kalbassi is the clinical lead for colorectal surgery for the trust and his areas of specialty include laparoscopic (keyhole) and colorectal surgery.

He is a national trainer in laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

His other interests include the treatment of early rectal cancer, functional bowel disorder and pelvic floor dysfunction.

He studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, with specialist surgical training in Ireland and the UK, with fellowships in general surgery with subspecialty of colorectal surgery and laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

Mr Kalbassi  is a national trainer and assessor in laparoscopic colorectal surgery and has been instrumental in developing laparoscopic colorectal surgery at Northumbria Healthcare.

He has also established new services including the enhanced recovery programme, which focuses on speeding up the recovery of patients after surgery, as well as a functional bowel/pelvic floor service.

In addition he is accredited in endoscopy by JAG (Joint Advisory Group for Endoscopy).

Mr Kalbassi has an interest in research with many publications and lectures at international conferences in his areas of specialty. He is a member several professional bodies including the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.

Mr Kalbassi has been a consultant surgeon at the trust since 2010.

Clinics

Mr Kalbassi sees patients at Wansbeck General Hospital, Alnwick Infirmary, Blyth Community Hospital and Monkseaton Medical Centre.
