She graduated from the University of Medicine in Cagliari, Italy, with Hons and then she entered a reconstructive surgery training programme and specialised in plastic and reconstructive surgery with Hons in 2000.
Miss Serra trained and developed extensive experience in breast reconstruction and breast surgery from working at the prestigious Plastic Surgery Unit of Canniesburn Hospital in Glasgow. She is specialised in complex microsurgical procedures and achieved a Diploma of microsurgery at University of Paris in 2001. She has undertaken a breast reconstruction fellowship in 1999 (Glasgow). She has been awarded a Master of surgery in oncoplastic breast surgery (East Anglia University)
She also worked at Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne and University Hospital of North Durham in Durham.
Miss Serra has a wide range of specialty interests which include a full range of onco-plastic procedures, immediate and delayed breast reconstruction procedures, congenital breast surgery, breast reduction, augmentation, breast asymmetry, lipofilling and post-bariatric surgery. In addition Miss Serra performs complex miscrosurgical procedures including DIEP flaps where fat tissue is taken from the abdomen and used to reconstruct the breast.
She has implemented the delayed-immediate breast reconstruction approach within the trust which allows patients who may require post-mastectomy radiotherapy to avoid the aesthetic and radiation-delivery problems that can occur after an immediate breast reconstruction. With this approach, patients who do not require post-mastectomy radiation therapy can achieve aesthetic outcomes similar to those with immediate reconstruction.
Miss Serra has an interest in research with many publications to her name, and is a member several professional bodies including GMC, FRCS, BAPRAS, MDDUS, BMA and North-East Medico-legal association of surgeons.
Miss Serra sees patients at North Tyneside, Hexham and Wansbeck general hospitals.
