Consultant Profile

Dr Wendy Carr

Breast physician

Dr Carr's areas of speciality are the medical management of breast cancer and benign breast disease. She has a particular interest in the management of osteoporosis and fracture risk and in supporting patients to contribute to their own health, wellbeing and care.

Dr Carr studied medicine in Aberdeen and after qualification trained as a GP. Whilst working for many years as a GP she pursued her interests in women’s health medicine within local hospitals and in the community, developing a particular interest in breast disease, bone health and management of the menopause.

She took up several leadership and management roles within primary care and ran an innovative fracture liaison service pilot. Having developed her interest in breast health she took up a role in the breast team at Northumbria.

Within our Trust, she is particularly involved in the medical management of benign and malignant breast disease and breast cancer therapy-induced bone loss. She has also been instrumental with the nursing team in developing and delivering the new ‘survivorship model’ of aftercare for patients moving on from their diagnosis of breast cancer. Empowering patients with the knowledge, skills and confidence to manage their own long-term health conditions encourages patients to make healthier lifestyle choices and take more responsibility for managing their own health and care.

She continues to work locally in primary care, particularly out-of-hours services where she is a GP registrar supervisor and as a GP here within Northumbria supporting the delivery of minor injury services trust wide.

Dr Carr is currently the professional Lead for the Northumbria Specialty and Associate Specialist Doctors and has been instrumental in developing this group of doctors within the trust.

Nationally she works with the National Osteoporosis Society and the Royal College of GPs to promote the management of osteoporosis and fracture risk.

In 2011 she won the British Society of Rheumatology Award for her work managing fracture risk within primary care.
