Dr Iain Matthews
Iain is a consultant cardiologist with a specialist interest in heart failure and complex implantable cardiac devices (cardiac resynchronisation therapy and defibrillators).
Having carried out his undergraduate training in Scotland, Iain trained firstly as a physician and then as a cardiologist in the North East. He started as a consultant within Northumbria Healthcare in March 2014.
Iain has a special interest in the implantation of devices to improve the symptoms of those with heart failure (cardiac resynchronisation therapy) and reduce the incidence of sudden death in those at highest risk with heart failure (implantable defibrillators). He is one of a trio of consultants running the multi-disciplinary heart failure service at Wansbeck General Hospital as well as the trust-wide complex devices service. He has strong links with the advanced heart failure and transplant team at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle.
Iain sits on the recently appointed Consultants Committee of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and is involved in the cardiac rhythm management section of the North East Cardiovascular Network.
Iain sees patients at Hexham and Wansbeck general hospitals.
