Physiotherapist runs 10k in memory of her mum

Jane Brown, senior paediatric physiotherapist at Alnwick Infirmary, is doing the 10k at the Kielder Marathon weekend 2018 in memory of her mum.

She’s never done 10k or taken part in any racing events, and only started running for pleasure since 2017 so this will be a personal achievement for Jane.

She first started running because she wanted to lose weight and her son was leaving home so she was looking for a new hobby. At the same time her mum became seriously ill and she found running provided escapism from daily worries.

Inspired by colleagues Sarah Goulden a school nurse and Monica Halliday, an education welfare officer, she joined them in the NHS couch to 5K challenge, and now runs for 30 minutes twice or three times a week.

She admits it can be hard to keep up with training especially in the winter, but finds going with friends and being part of a running club really helps.

She recalls: “Once when I was out running with Sarah and Monica, we bumped into a running and talking group called Mind and Sole. The philosophy really resonated with me so I joined. Its helped my fitness too as you’re always able to find someone who’s at similar level or who can challenge you to do better. It’s also a good way to socialise.”

Jane is looking forward to joining forces with friends from the Mind and Sole running group to complete the 10k challenge at Kielder Marathon saying:  “I don’t describe myself as a runner so the 10k will be a real challenge for me and I’m looking forward to running in this beautiful part of the country in memory of my mum.

If you are thinking of doing the 10k or any other challenge, my advice would be to give it a go.”

The Active Northumberland Kielder Marathon Weekend 2018 is delivered by Events of the North in conjunction with Northumbrian Water, Active Northumberland, Northumberland County Council and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
