Passionate about the NHS? Join us as public governor

People across Northumberland and North Tyneside who are passionate about developing health and care services are being given the opportunity to become more involved.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is holding elections for residents to become public governors of the trust and fill 20 vacancies which are available across Berwick upon Tweed, Blyth Valley, Hexham, North Shields, North West Tyneside, Wansbeck and Wallsend.

The role of a public governor is to represent the views of local people and help build links between Northumbria Healthcare and the many communities it serves.  The areas covered by the trust’s public governors follow the same geographical boundaries as political constituencies.

For the first time ever, the trust has also introduced a ‘Rest of England’ constituency to allow those who do not live in Northumberland or North Tyneside, but who have an interest in the NHS, to become involved.

Members of the public have until 5pm on Monday 10 April to submit their nomination.  Nomination forms are available from Electoral Reform Service by calling 0208 889 9203, emailing ftnominationenquiries@electoralreform.co.uk or online at www.ersvotes.com/nhft17, or by texting 2FTNH with your name and address to 88802.

People must first be a member of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust before they can put themselves forward as a candidate to become a public governor. Becoming a member is very straightforward and can be done by completing an online application form at www.northumbria.nhs.uk/get-involved/members-and-governors or by calling 0191 203 1296.

Alan Richardson, chair of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Our public governors are the voice of local people and play a hugely important role in our trust.

“They forge links with the many local communities we serve and help us to shape our priorities and develop local services.

“We’d urge anyone with an interest in healthcare to get involved and give our foundation team a ring on 0191 2013 1296 to find out more about the role.”

Northumbria Healthcare covers one of the largest geographical areas in the country and provides hospital and community services in North Tyneside and hospital, community and adult social care services in Northumberland.  The trust was rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission in 2016.
