If you are living with cancer or a life limiting condition you, or your family, may find that the Macmillan support service can provide you with useful information and support
This service is available if you are over 18 and living in North Tyneside or Northumberland.
Supporting you
If you just need some information you can contact us directly on 0191 293 4377.
If you want some additional support your GP, district nurse or Macmillan nurse will need to refer you to us. Please call us and we can help you with this too.
Once we have received your referral we will contact you directly to make an appointment to visit you either at your home or a community venue. Our advisor will chat to you about what you would like and what support you need.
Your support will then be provided by a Macmillan volunteer on a one-to-one basis. There are lots of different types of support which you can access at any one time – please just talk to your volunteer or advisor.
How we can help
We can help you with:
- Information and support
We can provide you with information on a wide range of subjects including cancer and any treatments and side effects, lifestyle and nutrition, holiday insurance, benefits and grants information and details of local support groups and events.
We have one-to-one support available if you are waiting for a diagnosis, living with cancer or caring for someone. This support can be at your home or at a local community venue. Wherever it is, we have someone to talk to who understands what you’re going though.
- Befriending
If your your social life has been affected by your situation, we can help you become involved in social activities or hobbies. We have befrienders who can accompany you to do the things you love, or find new things to enjoy.
- Bereavement
Visit our Bereavement page to find out more about the support that is available.
We can also give you one-to-one support if you have been bereaved and would find it helpful to talk to someone to adjust to life after loss and cope better.
- Support groups and events
We have a variety of groups for people affected by cancer, including carers. For more information, contact the team on 0191 293 4377.
- Day services
We deliver a range of day services at our day hospice based in North Tyneside.
Please note that we are not a clinical service and we don’t provide medical advice. Please see our cancer services section for information on our medical services.
Become a Macmillan volunteer
If you have some time to give and want to help, join our team of Macmillan volunteers. You can offer your support in lots of ways – help someone to get their social life back on track, help with someone who is adjusting to life after a loss, help in the office with administration or support within the Day Hospice. Even just being there for somebody with a cup of tea and a smile can go a long way.
You will be given full training and ongoing support to become part of the team.
