The Macmillan support service provides access to information and support for adults living with or beyond cancer or a life limiting condition, and their families and carers. The service is available to anyone aged over 18 in North Tyneside and Northumberland.

Supporting you

If you just need some information you can contact us directly on 0191 293 4377.

If you want or need any additional support you will need to be referred to the service by your GP, a district nurse or a Macmillan nurse. Please call us and we can help you with this too.

Once we have received your referral we will contact you directly to make an appointment to visit you either at your home or a community venue. At the first meeting one of our advisors will chat to you about what you would like and what support you need.

Your support will then be provided by a Macmillan volunteer on a one to one basis. You can access different types of support at any one time - please just talk to your volunteer or advisor.

Some of the things we can help with are:

Information and support

We can provide you with, or help you get, information on a wide range of subjects including cancer and any treatments and side effects, lifestyle and nutrition, holiday insurance, benefits and grants information and details of local support groups and events.

We have one-to-one support available if you are waiting for a diagnosis, living with cancer or caring for someone.  This support can be at your home or at a local community venue.  We have someone to talk to who understands what you’re going though.

Befriending

If your situation has affected your social life, we can support you to be involved in social activities or hobbies. We offer one to one support through a befriender who can accompany you to do the things you love, or find new things to enjoy.

Bereavement

We offer one to one support you if you have been bereaved and would find it helpful to talk to someone to adjust to life after loss and cope better.

Support groups and events

Macmillan Support Services offer a variety of groups for people affected by cancer, including carers. For more information, contact the team on 0191 293 4377.

Day services

We deliver a range of day services at our day hospice based in North Tyneside.

Become a Macmillan volunteer

If you have some time to give and want to help, join our team of Macmillan volunteers. You can offer your support in lots of ways - help someone to get their social life back on track, help with someone who is adjusting to life after a loss, help in the office with administration or support within the Day Hospice. Even just being there for somebody with a cup of tea and a smile can go a long way.

You will be given full training and ongoing support to become part of the team.
