Out of Hours Services

If you have an illness or injury and need medical help outside of normal working hours there are lots of local services available to you such as pharmacies and out of hours GP services.


Your local pharmacy will be able to provide you with advice and medication to help relieve the symptoms of common ailments.

Out-of-hours GP and district nurse services

If your GP surgery is closed and you need to see a doctor or nurse urgently, call NHS 111.

If you need the services of a district nurse outside of normal working hours please call 0191 293 2580 Monday to Sunday 5pm-11.00pm and all day on weekends and bank holidays.

If you are ringing after 11.00pm – 8.30am please call Switchboard – 0344 811 8111 who will put you through to the district nurse on call.

Walk-in services and urgent care centres

If you have a minor injury or illness such as a cut, sprain, minor burn or broken bone you can be seen in a walk-in centre or urgent care centre. You do not need to make an appointment but it is worth telephoning in advance to check that you can be treated, especially if you are taking a young child.
