Northumbria scores hat-trick with cancer patient experience poll

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has been named in the top ten best performing NHS Trusts in England for the third consecutive year when it comes to providing a top quality experience of care for cancer patients.

The latest National Cancer Patient Experience Survey takes into account the views of 116,000 patients in all 155 NHS trusts that provide treatment to patients with cancer.

It measures patients’ experiences while being treated in hospital including whether they felt involved in decisions about their care and treatment, how confident they felt in the doctors and nurses providing their care and whether they were treated with privacy, dignity and respect when discussing and during their treatment.

Cancer services run by Northumbria Healthcare in Northumberland and North Tyneside are consistently rated among the best in England, with teams providing specialist care to hundreds of patients in hospital, in the community and at home every day.

For people who require treatment in hospital, Northumbria Healthcare has dedicated oncology units at North Tyneside, Hexham and Wansbeck general hospitals, and Berwick Infirmary with plans to open a unit at Alnwick Infirmary next year.

Gill Starkey, lead cancer nurse at Northumbria Healthcare, said: “Providing patients with first-class care is at the very heart of what our frontline teams deliver every day across Northumberland and North Tyneside and it’s fantastic news that patients with cancer who we’ve looked after have given us such excellent and consistent feedback over the past three years.

“Our specialist teams do an excellent job caring for patients at what is a particularly distressing time and these results are a reflection of their hard work, commitment and compassion. I would like to thank each and every one of them for their exceptional work.”

Brian Hedley is one of the patients who has been cared for by Northumbria Healthcare’s specialist cancer teams after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Brian, from Morpeth, said: “I cannot thank the staff at Wansbeck General Hospital enough – right from the moment I was diagnosed, the level of support, commitment and professionalism from every member of the team has been, and continues to be, outstanding.”

Brian was so impressed with the hospital staff that he shared his story with Patient Opinion, a national organisation which encourages patients to give feedback about health services.

Commenting on the results Sean Duffy, NHS England national clinical director for cancer, said: “This survey allows people who have been diagnosed with cancer to provide feedback on the care and treatment that they have received and I am heartened to see that so many patients had a good experience of their care. Whilst the results of this survey are very encouraging, every patient deserves the best experience they can have of care and that is what we shall be working on for future.

“This is the third year this survey has taken place and with each survey we are seeing improvements in the scores which indicates to me that the organisations individually and the NHS collectively is listening which clearly demonstrates the power of the patient voice.”
