Northumbria named best place to work in NHS following special recognition award

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has been named as the best place to work in the NHS* after winning a ‘special recognition award’ at the national ‘Patient Safety Congress and Awards’** being jointly held this week in Birmingham.

In a double accolade for the region’s NHS, Northumbria Healthcare was awarded the ‘Best Place to Work in the NHS for 2015’ in the acute care category, ahead of 40 other shortlisted provider organisations across the country. 

The award, presented to the trust on Tuesday 7 July, recognises and celebrates the culture created at Northumbria Healthcare where the leadership team has worked hard to promote great staff engagement and create an environment where people can enjoy their work.   Using data compiled from the 2014 NHS staff survey, the award recognises Northumbria’s success in seven core areas where it excels ahead of other NHS organisations, both in the North East and beyond:

·         leadership and planning

·         corporate culture and communication

·         role satisfaction

·         work environment

·         relationship with supervisor

·         training, development and resources

·         employee engagement and satisfaction

The ‘Best Place to Work’ award follows earlier success on Monday 6 July when Northumbria Healthcare was presented with a new ‘special recognition award’ at the national Patient Safety Awards 2015. 

The first national accolade of its kind, the ‘special recognition award’ celebrates the patient-centric and compassionate approach of care delivered by health and social care teams across Northumberland and North Tyneside, recognising the multiple achievements of the trust in recent years. 

It means Northumbria Healthcare is now the first NHS organisation in England to enter a new national ‘hall of fame’ for those organisations which demonstrate a clear focus on patient safety and continuous quality improvement.

Chief executive at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Jim Mackey, said: “Our staff are the heart of our organisation and do a simply amazing job every single day providing safe and compassionate care for our patients.  It is down to their commitment, passion and relentless focus on quality improvement that we have achieved two such important and prestigious national awards.

“I am enormously proud that Northumbria has been recognised as the best in the NHS – not only for the safe and high quality we provide for our patients, but also for the positive experience, support and opportunities we provide for our staff.  The two go hand in hand and by listening to our teams and making sure our people feel valued, motivated and happy in their work, we will continue to provide the very best care for our patients and build on these successes for many years to come.”

Ann Stringer, executive director of human resources and organisational development at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We know that there is proven link between engaged staff and positive patient outcomes and it is really fantastic to be recognised for both on such a national scale.

“Over many years we have worked hard to create an open and supportive culture where our teams feel their role makes a real difference to patients and are empowered to make changes.  By embedding our core values, each and every member of staff is encouraged to continually strive to make improvements to patient care and the board are fully committed to supporting them in any way we can. 

“We are delighted that our efforts to engage with teams and create an inclusive workplace have been recognised nationally and have had such a positive impact on patient care.”

Commenting on the awards, Jenni Middleton, Editor of Nursing Times and Alastair McLellan, Editor of HSJ said:  “There is a stack of evidence that shows that if staff are happy and engaged, they will deliver higher quality care. There will be less absenteeism and work-related stress, but this will lead to lower infection rates, lower mortality rates. In short, trusts that take better care of their staff take better care of their patients and service users. But it can be hard to do the right thing in these austere times, with the pressure on to meet targets and make budget cuts. That’s why Northumbria should be congratulated for their extraordinary efforts to do the right thing by their staff – and their patients.”
