Northumbria Healthcare’s stroke services among best in country

Services in Northumberland and North Tyneside for people who have suffered a stroke are among the best in the country.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s dedicated stroke units at Hexham, Wansbeck and North Tyneside general hospitals have been rated among the top nationally in a clinical audit.

The Trust’s three stroke units provide specialist acute care and rehabilitation. Hexham General Hospital was also the best performing unit in the region.

Dr Stuart Huntley, consultant physician and head of the Trust’s stroke services, said: “These excellent results show that the services we provide for our patients are among the best in the country and we are delivering a consistently high standard of care at our hospitals.

“They are testament to the hard work and enthusiasm of our teams who are committed to providing high quality, patient-focussed care.

“Care delivered by a specialist team is the single biggest factor that can improve a person’s recovery. We provide acute care and rehabilitation with highly-skilled specialist teams of nurses, doctors and therapists.

“We are also able to support patients who we feel would benefit from going home early with a unique discharge service which provides intensive support and rehabilitation seven-days-a-week in their own homes. This has been extremely well received by patients and has halved the length of time patients need to stay in hospital.”

The Stroke Improvement National Audit Programme (SINAP), run by the Stroke Programme at the Royal College of Physicians, rates care provided to stroke patients in their first three days in hospital.

The audit covers access to life-saving scans and drugs and the time taken to be assessed by a specialist multi-disciplinary team including a stroke consultant. These results are for the first quarter of 2012/13.

In addition to the Trust’s dedicated stroke units, rehabilitation in also provided at Alnwick and Berwick infirmaries. The Trust also runs services delivered in the community for people who have suffered a stroke.
