New sexual health clinics at Blyth Community Hospital

Residents in Blyth will have increased access to confidential help and advice on all aspects of sexual health from next week.

The service, part of Northumberland Sexual Health Service which is run by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, will open on Tuesday 11 March in the Thomas Knight Day Unit at Blyth Community Hospital.

The new premises offer a full range of sexual health services including contraception, screening and treatment of sexually-transmitted infections, and information on pregnancy options and sex therapy.

The clinics were previously held at Carlton Street with young people drop-ins located at the Point.

Joanne Coyne, lead sexual health specialist nurse at Northumberland Sexual Health Service, said: “We are delighted to improve access to a wider range of sexual health services under one roof for Blyth residents.

“Anyone can come to see us if they’re worried about any symptoms they’ve got, or if they need advice, or just a sexual health check-up. Our service is free, confidential and open to everyone. We also have specific drop-ins for young people aged 13 and over every Wednesday from 4pm to 6pm.

“We’re here to discuss a range of contraception options to help people choose a method to suit their needs.”

The move to Blyth Community Hospital is a direct result of patients’ feedback and better transport links to the clinic.

It follows the recent relocation of the Northumberland Sexual Health Service headquarters from Carlton Street Clinic to Morpeth Clinic in Gas House Lane last week.

Morpeth Clinic provides office accommodation for the administration team and associated functions including the new appointment, results and advice line for the county, healthcare professionals who run sexual health services and is a training centre for GPs and community nurses. Some clinical and sex therapy sessions run from the Morpeth Clinic.
