New sexual health clinic in Morpeth

Residents in Morpeth now have increased access to confidential help and advice on all aspects of sexual health.

Morpeth Clinic, part of Northumberland Sexual Health Service which is run by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, opened last week on Gas House Lane.

The headquarters, which were previously based in Carlton Street in Blyth, moved to the new modern facility which brings back into use a former GP surgery building that was damaged following the floods in 2008.

The trust refurbished Morpeth Clinic which houses the Northumberland Sexual Health Service administration team and associated functions including the new appointment, results and advice line for the county. The new public telephone number for the service’s appointment and advice line for the county has changed and is now 01670 51 51 51.

Morpeth Clinic will also provide office space for healthcare professionals who run sexual health services across Northumberland and is a training venue for GP and community nursing staff to improve access to sexual health services county-wide.

Some clinical sessions are running from the clinic providing contraception, screening and treatment of sexually-transmitted infections and information on pregnancy options and sex therapy.

Joanne Coyne, lead sexual health specialist nurse at Northumberland Sexual Health Service, said: “We are delighted to improve access to a wider range of sexual health services under one roof for Northumberland residents in this new modern facility.

“Anyone can come to see us if they’re worried about any symptoms they’ve got, or if they need advice, contraception or just a sexual health check-up.

“We hope that by having our clinic in such a busy location we will encourage more people to think about taking care of their sexual health. Our service is free, confidential and open to everyone.”

The move to Morpeth Clinic is a direct result of patients’ feedback and better transport links to the county-wide service.

Northumberland Sexual Health Service continues to provide sexual health services in Blyth and throughout Northumberland, including specific services for young people and women who have unplanned pregnancies.

Clinics are available in over 30 venues including health centres, hospitals, GP surgeries, schools and colleges on a weekly basis.  The trust also provides sexual health services in North Tyneside which are free, confidential and open to all age groups and sexualities.
