New Haltwhistle hospital welcomes patients and staff

The new Haltwhistle War Memorial Hospital has opened its doors to patients.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s facility – part of the £4.6million integrated health and social care scheme in the town – is now in operation and providing high quality care to patients.

The pioneering purpose-built scheme, built in partnership with Northumberland County Council, is one of the first facilities of its kind in the country to provide hospital and social care support under one roof.

Hospital ward manager Val Reynolds said the staff were pleased to return to the town and they have received many positive comments from patients and their families.

She said: “It’s fantastic to be back in Haltwhistle and the new hospital is absolutely superb.

“To have this type of facility which has been purpose-built for our needs is excellent and enables us to improve the way we care for our patients.

“Patients and their relatives have been so impressed with the facilities and the vast improvement they represent from the old hospital, and are so pleased that care is again being provided in the town.

“We’ve received excellent feedback from them and members of the community and everyone is just so pleased that it is open.”

The hospital is on the first floor of the development and has 15 beds. These are arranged in two four-bed bays and seven single en-suite rooms offering the utmost privacy and dignity, with one room specially adapted for bariatric patients.

The hospital team provides support and rehabilitation including occupational therapy and physiotherapy for elderly patients, palliative care for those approaching the end of life and a minor injuries service which is open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

One of the first patients in the hospital is Sylvia Gargett from Corbridge. She said: “The hospital is absolutely beautiful and the staff have been wonderful. We’re so fortunate to have such a facility here.”

The hospital team and patients have been based at Hexham General Hospital while the facility was being built.

The main telephone number for Haltwhistle hospital is unchanged – 01434 320225.

The scheme has 12 purpose-designed extra-care flats on the ground floor called Greenholme Court which have been funded and developed by Northumberland County Council. These are now managed by Homes for Northumberland on behalf of the council.

These offer the opportunity for couples and friends to stay together and receive individually-tailored levels of on-site care.

The first tenants have moved into the development and others will follow over the coming weeks.
