New Berwick hospital plans progressing well, says trust

Proposals for a new £25million hospital in Berwick are progressing well behind the scenes, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has said.

The trust said that many positive discussions are taking place and that it expects to be in a position to announce its build partner in the near future.

And the trust hopes to be able to share the plans for the development with residents in the New Year.

Northumbria Healthcare is giving the update ahead of being part of a regional engagement roadshow which will visit Berwick market on Wednesday 16 October to raise awareness of NHS organisations in the North East and North Cumbria working together as an ‘Integrated Care System’.

The new hospital will be built on the site of the existing Berwick Infirmary. Embracing the latest technology, it will provide all the current services with a view to incorporating more when safe to do so.

In the summer, the trust, which is committed to reducing the number of miles patients have to travel for routine appointments, announced that the new facility would include endoscopy services.

Marion Dickson, executive director for nursing, midwifery, allied health professionals, surgery and community services at Northumbria Healthcare, is leading the Berwick redevelopment project.

She said: “Ahead of our team coming to Berwick next week as part of the regional roadshow, we felt it important to reassure the community of the vast amount of work that’s taking place behind the scenes to progress our plans for a new hospital.

“As you can imagine for a development of this scale and complexity, there is lots to discuss such as revising our previous plans to make sure they suit today’s needs to working through how we are going to be able to continue to provide services while we build a new hospital at the same time.

“As a project group we are on top of all these aspects, and many more besides, and are committed to moving things along as quickly as we can. We fully appreciate that people want to see plans and as soon as we are in a position to share them, we will, and hope that will be early in 2020.

“In the meantime, we’d urge people to come along to the regional roadshow in Berwick next week to find out more about how we’re all working together to have the best health and wellbeing outcomes in England.”

The NHS ‘Join our Journey’ regional roadshow is visiting a number of places across the North East and North Cumbria this autumn, for all the dates visit here or follow @NENC_ICS on Twitter or on Facebook here.
