Marion Dickson named as new Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals for Northumbria Healthcare

Northumbria Healthcare has today announced that Marion Dickson has been appointed to the post of Executive Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals.

Marion, a Berwick resident who also serves as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Surgery, will focus on continuing to improve quality of care for patients – building on the excellent services the trust already provides – and ensuring Northumbria staff receive the very best training and development in the NHS in a cycle of continuous improvement.

On being appointed, Marion said:

“It is a real privilege to step into this new and exciting role. I am overwhelmed by the positive responses I have had from staff across the trust. Our excellent staff are the backbone of our organisation and I will continue to work closely with them, supporting them to become the best they can be.”

Marion began her nursing career in 1974, firstly as an auxiliary nurse at her local hospital in Duns prior to her General Nurse training at the Western General in Edinburgh. She was a staff nurse and ward manager at Berwick infirmary for several years before going back to Edinburgh in 1988 to do community nursing studies specialising in Health Visiting and worked for several years in north Northumberland before taking up a junior management role in 1999.

Since then Marion has worked in various positions throughout the trust both in the hospital, community, and practice settings initially at operational services manager level then General Manager and as Deputy Director and moving to Chief Operating Officer for Surgery.

“I come from a family of teachers and originally that’s what I set out to be. But, after working in my local hospital, even for that short amount of time, was enough to change my mind. From then on, caring for people – being part of our NHS – was all I wanted to do. I am passionate about providing the best care for our patients as well as supporting our staff to enable them to deliver that care.”

Welcoming her to the role Sir James Mackey, chief executive at Northumbria Healthcare, said:

“Marion has done a fantastic job in her various roles here over the years, and most recently as COO for surgery, spearheading numerous projects and fostering an environment where innovation and outstanding patient care have become the norm.

“She has the NHS in her blood and cares passionately about patients and staff – essential attributes in the role she is taking up.

“I am very excited to welcome her to her new role and very much look forward to continuing to work with her as we look to implement the trust’s five-year strategy and the NHS Long Term Plan.”

In her new role Marion will sit on the trust’s board of directors and report directly to the chief executive.
