Local artists’ work showcased at hospital exhibition
A new exhibition has been unveiled at Hexham General Hospital showcasing the work of local artists.
Entitled ‘TOUCH’, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s six-month exhibition has been curated by Matilda Bevan and features work by seven local artists: Jo Aris, Enrique Azocar, Linda France, Pauline Gibson, Mathilda Hornsey, Sheila Martin and Claudia Sacher.
Describing the ideas behind the show, Matilda said: “The word TOUCH reminds viewers that not only are these hand-made things, but in hospital touch is immediately what is happening to each patient while they’re receiving care.
“My brief was to invite local artists to exhibit and they were chosen for their use of colour as a communicator and because their work has clear emotional resonance. I also felt it was really important to the ethos of the show to include a high school student’s piece [Mathilda Hornsey].”
Mathilda said: “I am studying art at Queen Elizabeth High School and was delighted to be given the opportunity to take part in the exhibition at the hospital. My artwork is entitled ‘Bloom’ and is a representation of how in the midst of sadness and despair there always blooms happiness and life.”
Brenda Longstaff, head of arts and patient environment programme at Northumbria Healthcare, said: “We are delighted to show this new exhibition at the hospital. Hexham has a thriving arts community and it’s wonderful that the artists have been able to contribute in this way and share their talents.
“We’re really pleased that this exhibition further enhances the hospital environment for our patients and visitors.”
The exhibition is on display until 26 October and can be seen in the atrium outside the HVS (Hospital Volunteer Service) shop. Some of the artwork is for sale.
The exhibition has been organised by the trust’s Bright Northumbria charity which has for the past 15 years funded the development of an award-winning healing arts programme which uses art as as a therapeutic medium to improve the hospital environment for patients, visitors and staff.
