Lifetime achievement award for Northumbria nurse Jan

A nurse who has been at the heart of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s drive to continually improve patients’ experiences has received a national award.

Jan Hutchinson won the lifetime achievement award at the Patient Experience Network Awards and was also named patient experience professional of the year for 2018.

Beginning her 42-year (and counting) NHS career in 1977, Jan cared for patients on wards and in critical care until she joined the newly-formed patient experience team at the trust in 2010.

Set up to listen and act on patients’ feedback to make care delivered in hospitals in Northumberland and North Tyneside even better, it is now widely recognised as one of the most comprehensive programmes in the NHS.

Jan has also led work to support and share the trust’s expertise with other organisations to set up programmes, as part of the Patient Experience Collaboration.

Jan, service improvement lead at Northumbria Healthcare, said: “Words cannot express how delighted I am to receive this award. To be named patient experience professional of the year is totally amazing however to be recognised for my work across my whole career is truly unbelievable.

“My many years’ experience working as a nurse on the frontline taught me so much and helps me every day in my role driving forward improvements that really make a difference to patients.

“I am privileged to be part of a team and a trust which is always striving to do better for our patients.

“Being able to share the good work we’re doing at Northumbria with other trusts and helping every one of them make improvements for their patients has been most rewarding and I look forward to continually benefitting not only our patients, however, those across the NHS.”

Every year Northumbria Healthcare collects the views of 50,000 patients so that it can understand what matters most to them when they are at their most vulnerable and openly shares the feedback with staff.

Annie Laverty, chief experience officer at Northumbria Healthcare, said: “Jan has dedicated more than 40 years of her life to the NHS – quite a remarkable legacy in terms of not just longevity but also the energy that she has brought to every single day of a career spent helping patients, families and colleagues.

“As a nurse, Jan led from the front with her sleeves rolled up, always asking more of herself first before being clear of what she expects from others.

“For the last nine years, Jan has led the patient experience team through a remarkable discovery of improvement. She has been at the heart of our patient experience success precisely because she is a nurse to her bones and her commitment to her profession is just as strong now as it was when she started in 1977.

“Jan’s desire to improve patient experience is not restricted to our own trust – she has supported countless learning exchanges and visits from other organisations. Above all her professionalism is wrapped up in the biggest heart and the lifetime achievement award is so richly deserved.”

Ruth Evans, managing director of the Patient Experience Network, said: “It’s been an absolute privilege to work alongside Jan. She has been involved with the network since our inception and has been a great supporter ever since.

“More importantly, though, it is the support we have witnessed Jan giving to help others both at Northumbria and to other organisations, through the Patient Experience Collaboration and other work, that has made her stand out.

“Her endless energy, generosity of spirit and expertise with empathy has helped many to improve their patients’ experiences – she is the very worthy winner of our lifetime achievement award for 2018.”
