Learn more about hospital pharmacy

Teenagers interested in working in a hospital pharmacy can find out more at North Tyneside General Hospital next week.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is opening up its pharmacy department to young people at school or college to raise awareness of the various careers available in hospital pharmacy.

The open evening, on Thursday 10 October, will showcase how Northumbria Healthcare’s high-tech pharmacy department is responsible for ensuring the safe and effective use of medicines for patients who are admitted to hospitals in Northumberland and North Tyneside.

Dr Wasim Baqir, pharmacy pre-registration manager at Northumbria Healthcare, said: “Working in a hospital pharmacy is an extremely rewarding career and here at Northumbria Healthcare there are excellent opportunities for staff development.

“The open evening will showcase how our pharmacy department is integral to providing high quality care to patients in hospitals in Northumberland and North Tyneside while giving young people plenty to think about as they decide which career path to follow.”

Young people will be able to tour the hospital’s pharmacy department at the event and see the dispensing robot – an automated dispensing assistant – which is simplifying and speeding up the way the department stores and dispenses medicines.

They will also be able to talk to the range of staff who carry out different roles in the department.
