Kielder Marathon weekend

This year is the tenth anniversary of the Kielder Marathon weekend which takes place on the 12 and 13 October and is delivered by Events of the North in conjunction with the trust, Northumbrian Water, Active Northumberland and Northumberland County Council. It includes a marathon, half marathon, 10k, Junior events as well as run bike run.

What we are doing

As an NHS employer we are keen to support staff, patients and visitors to make healthier choices and that’s why we are proud to be supporting the Kielder Marathon weekend.

We’re keen to inspire people who’ve never run a race to enter or simply find out more about what it involves.

We are delighted to have staff Kielder ambassadors for each event and you can follow their journey including their training plans here. We are also pleased to work with the event sponsors on an Ask the Expert campaign, see below for details.

Kielder Ambassadors

Tracey – 10k Kielder Ambassador

Tracey Smith is a hotel services officer based at Wansbeck General. She was inspired to start running seven years ago after completing the Race for Life 5k in memory of her grandad and has never looked back. As well as helping her to keep fit running has really helped her mental health too. She suffered postnatal depression 9 years ago and found running to be her saviour. She says there is no better way to combat stress than hearing the sound of your own footsteps and the sense of achievement when you finish a race.

Rosie – Half Marathon Kielder Ambassador

Rosie Davison is a health trainer, based at County Hall, in Morpeth. She’s doing the half marathon to inspire others to get active and maybe do their first ever race. She wouldn’t describe herself as a runner as she’s more likely to be on a badminton court or swimming. This will be her first half marathon at Kielder and to encourage others to get active and has set up running clubs; one for staff and another for Amble residents following the couch to 5k programme.

Roy – Run Bike Run Kielder Ambassador

Roy Young is a performance analyst, and one of the trust health advocates. Since he started running 10 years ago he’s lost four stone. It’s led to a complete life style change; “a lighter, happier and more confident me”. He loves racing at Kielder. He’s ran the 10k three times and this will be his fourth Run Bike Run. Roy also wants to inspire and support colleagues to get more active and leads a staff running group.

Finn- Marathon Kielder Marathon Ambassador

Finn Murphy, hardware deployment technician in digital services is based at Wansbeck General Hospital. He turned 60 this year and wanted to show you’re never too old to do a marathon! He is looking to mark the occasion and get a personal best. He’s not done a marathon in 20 years so this will be a real challenge.
