Hospital patients rate care at Northumbria among best in the NHS

Patients receiving hospital-based care in Northumberland and North Tyneside have rated their experiences among the best in the country, according to the national inpatient survey results published by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) today.

The results saw Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust rated as one of the best trusts in England, ranked alongside major specialist centres, for delivering a high quality patient experience across a number of areas including:

·         Waiting lists & planned admissions

·         The hospital and ward

·         Care and treatment

·         Operations and procedures

·         Leaving hospital

Northumbria Healthcare was ranked 12th out of 149 trusts nationally, with only major specialist centres scoring higher and the trust also scored higher in more domains than any other North East hospital.

Mr David Evans, chief executive at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust said: “These results are simply fantastic news for our patients and testament to every single person working at Northumbria Healthcare who is committed to delivering a high quality patient experience.

“To achieve such exceptional feedback from our patients, especially considering the continued and unprecedented rise in demand we are seeing for NHS services year on year, is truly outstanding and all of our staff should feel rightly very proud.

“I would like to thank each and every member of staff for their commitment and dedication to patient care – it is thanks to their hard work that we continue to be the best performing in the NHS.”

Annie Laverty, director of patient experience at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are delighted to receive such positive feedback from patients who’ve had a stay in hospital with us and we are really proud of our frontline teams who continue to excel and live up to our values of putting patients first.

“We have seen some of our busiest times on record over the past 12 months and despite these challenges, the compassionate care delivered by our dedicated, caring workforce continues to shine through in the feedback we get from patients every day.

“Our approach at Northumbria has always been about understanding what matters most to our patients, encouraging our teams to own and lead improvements and to foster a positive mind-set to make things even better.  We will continue to strive for yet more improvements and ensure that every one of our patients has the best possible experience while in our care.”

Northumbria Healthcare is widely recognised as having one of the most comprehensive patient experience programmes in the NHS and, alongside national surveys, gathers the views of 50,000 patients every year in order to continually improve.

The trust, who recently won ‘overall best trust’ at The Patient Experience Network Awards in March 2017 and the CHKS Patient Experience Award in May 2017, is sharing its learning across the NHS for the benefit of patient care.

Leaders at Northumbria Healthcare are now working with The Patient Experience Network and nine other NHS organisations nationally to share best practice and support other parts of the NHS to develop their own bespoke patient experience programmes.
