Hospital demolition imminent

Partners building an integrated health and social care scheme in Haltwhistle gathered on site today ahead of the next stage of the development.

Representatives of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Northumberland County Council and contractors GB Building Solutions were at Haltwhistle War Memorial Hospital before it is knocked down.

Demolition of the hospital is due to commence soon to make way for the purpose-built facility which will provide hospital and extra care services.

The scheme will have 15 hospital beds on the first floor and 12 extra care flats with support for tenants on the ground floor, to replace the residential care service previously delivered at Greenholme.

Initial works to prepare for the demolition have been carried out and construction will start as soon as the process is complete.

Building work is expected to be complete in September next year.

Brian Griggs, director of capital planning and development at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Demolishing the existing hospital building is the next step in developing an integrated health and social care scheme.

“The hospital building has been a feature of the town for many years however it is now time to look to the future and the new purpose-built facility which will greatly improve health and social care provision in Haltwhistle and be of huge benefit to the local community.”

Councillor Ian Hutchinson, Northumberland County Council’s ward member for Haltwhistle, said: “This will be a fantastic facility for Haltwhistle and the surrounding rural area. I’m very excited to see work progressing thanks to the hard work of everyone involved and I look forward to seeing the completed building next year.”

Martin Hutson, general manager at GB Building Solutions, said: “GB Building Solutions are delighted to be associated with Haltwhistle integrated care facility, which will provide long-term healthcare benefits to the local community of Haltwhistle and the surrounding areas.

“GB Building Solutions are committed to assisting in preserving the heritage of Haltwhistle, as such we have carried out an historical audit of the existing property in order to record its history for future generations.

“GB Building Solutions will be commencing the demolition works in earnest in order to construct the new integrated care facility and expect to hand over a completed project to the community of Haltwhistle in September 2013.”

Services delivered at Haltwhistle hospital temporarily transferred to Hexham General Hospital in the summer. The Haltwhistle ward has relocated to Ward 1 at Hexham with physiotherapy and occupational therapy facilities based elsewhere in the hospital.

Staff from Haltwhistle are providing these services during this period.
