High praise for Hexham hospital

Hexham General Hospital was highly praised by a national healthcare charity following a recent visit.

The Patients Association said the hospital was extremely clean and complimented the staff on their commitment to providing high quality care.

The charity’s chief executive Katherine Murphy and national projects director Heather Eardley visited the hospital to see Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s approach to patient-centred care and its work to continually improve patients’ experiences of its services.

Every year the Trust listens to the views of more than 25,000 patients so that it can understand what people think about the care it provides in order to further improve.

Katherine said: “We were extremely impressed with everything we saw at Hexham hospital and thought it was immaculately clean. Despite the staff being busy, everywhere we went we witnessed an atmosphere of calm which certainly gives the right impression to patients.

“What stood out for me from talking to the staff was the sense of pride they take in their work – they genuinely want to give patients the best experience possible and give them the best care.

“We also got a real feeling from the staff that they fully understood and truly valued that the hospital is part of the community and recognise that they are answerable to that community.”

The Patients Association praised the Trust’s “openness” and “transparency” for displaying patients’ feedback in the hospital. They said the ‘infographics’ were easy to understand.

Annie Laverty, director of patient experience at the Trust, said: “We were pleased to welcome The Patients Association to Hexham hospital and we were delighted that our philosophy for patient-centred care shone through from our staff.

“We pride ourselves in providing high quality care to all our patients and to receive this endorsement is a real boost to our staff and our patients.”

The Patients Association is a healthcare charity which for nearly 50 years has advocated for better access to accurate and independent information for patients and the public; equal access to high quality health care for patients; and the right for patients to be involved in all aspects of decision making regarding their health care.
