Hexham GP practice is recognised for young people friendly health services

A medical practice in Hexham has been recognised for its work to become more young people friendly.

Burn Brae Medical Group in Hexham has achieved the NHS ‘You’re Welcome’ Award for young people friendly health services.

You’re Welcome is a Department of Health initiative to encourage health services to be more young people friendly, involving them in decision-making and giving them a say in how they access services.

Over the past year, Burn Brae Medical Group has worked towards NHS You’re Welcome accreditation supported by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and young people’s organisation Changemakers.

Burn Brae Medical Group GP, Dr Anne Chalmers said: “This award recognises the work we have done with our patients to improve the services we offer to young people.  We are all delighted to be accredited and look forward to continuing the work we have started, particularly our open access clinic for young people.”

Health service venues are assessed against the You’re Welcome workbook, which contains ten quality criteria and includes topic areas such as confidentiality, access, staff training, skills and attitudes, and the environment.

It aims to improve the accessibility and acceptability of health service venues accessed by young people. Underpinning the process, settings must demonstrate how young people are involved in the evaluation of existing service provision and new developments.

Burn Brae business manager Simon Guy said:  “Working with young people to improve the services we offer them has been very rewarding and our thanks go to everyone who has helped us with this project, it’s been a real team effort with real benefits for young people”.

As part of the process, young people gave feedback about the service and practical changes to the environment.

Beverly Davison, Health Improvement Advanced Specialist for Northumbria Healthcare, said: “We are pleased that the Burn Brae Medical Group has been awarded the accreditation. The group has been very motivated towards making their services young people friendly and this accreditation demonstrates their commitment to involving young people in having a direct say in how health services are delivered to them and engaging them in the process.”

You’re Welcome is a quality framework that sets out standards to make health services such as hospitals, community health services and GP surgeries friendly and inviting places for young people. It works by involving young people aged 11 to 19 years old in the design, monitoring and evaluation of these services.
