Helping families in Northumberland to ‘get active’

Families in Northumberland wanting to lead a healthier lifestyle are being encouraged to sign up to new programmes starting next month.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s ‘Get Active Northumberland’ (GAN) programme is running ten-week courses in Cramlington and Berwick to encourage parents and children to be more active and eat more healthily.

The programmes, for children aged five to 13 years and their parents, involve fun physical activities and learning about healthy eating. The Cramlington programme will run on Tuesdays, starting Tuesday 1 October, from 4pm to 6pm at Cramlington Learning Village. The Berwick programme will run on Thursdays, starting Thursday 3 October, from 4pm to 6pm at Berwick Academy.

To attend one of the courses, families must contact the GAN team on 01670 784186, 07789 941646 or in advance.

Helen Prytherch, health improvement manager at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The courses are a great way for parents and their children to learn about healthy eating and being active together and, above all, they’re a lot of fun.

“We would encourage people in Northumberland to get in touch with the team to find out more.”

The GAN programme – one of Northumbria Healthcare’s community health services – supports parents, children and young people who are concerned about their weight to make positive changes to their lifestyles.
