Have your say on healthcare and become a public governor

People in Northumberland and North Tyneside are being given the opportunity to have a say on local healthcare services.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is holding elections for local people to become public governors of the organisation with vacancies across both areas.

Residents have until Wednesday 27 May to submit a nomination via Electoral Reform Service on 0208 889 9203.

The role of a public governor is to represent the views of local people and help build links between Northumbria Healthcare and the many communities it serves.

People must be a member of the trust before they can put themselves forward as a candidate to become a public governor. Becoming a member is straightforward, open to everybody living in Northumberland and North Tyneside, and can be done by completing an online application form at www.northumbria.nhs.uk/members or calling 0191 203 1296.

There are three vacancies in the Berwick area which covers Alnwick and Rothbury, one in Blyth Valley, two in North Shields, three in North West Tyneside, two in Wallsend, four in Wansbeck, three in Hexham, and three in Whitley Bay.

Brian Flood, chairman of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Our public governors are a vital part of our trust and play an important role helping us to forge links with our local communities.

“They are the voice of local people and their views help us to shape our priorities and develop local services.

“With the opening of our Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in June, it is a really exciting time to join our trust and I would urge anyone from across our patch with an interest in healthcare to get involved.

“If you’d like to find out more about our trust and the role that governors play, please do not hesitate to contact our foundation team for an informal chat on 0191 203 1296.”

Nomination forms to become a public governor of Northumbria Healthcare are available from Electoral Reform Service by calling 0208 889 9203, emailing john.box@electoralreform.co.uk or texting 2FT NH and your name and address to 88802. All completed nominations must be received by 5pm on Wednesday 27 May.

Northumbria Healthcare covers one of the largest geographical areas in the country and provides hospital and community services in North Tyneside and hospital, community and adult social care services in Northumberland.
