Harry Mercer

Harry was a hugely valued and admired member of our Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Volunteering Service. He had been an active volunteer buggy driving at North Tyneside hospital for many years. At 97 years of age, Harry was still serving his community by meeting and greeting visitors and patients when they arrived at hospital. In total he had completed over 70 years of volunteering in a number of roles across the region.

Harry decided to retire from service in June 2019, to enjoy time with his family and friends. Unfortunately he took ill and sadly passed away on Thursday 30 April 2020.

Harry was a true pillar of society, a gentle kind man, who was a wonderful example of how volunteering can become a life-long rewarding activity. He will be truly missed by everyone within the trust and the volunteer service.

The trust will work with Harry’s family within the coming months to organise a fitting tribute and memorial to highlight the fantastic work he carried out.  As a service we understand staff and volunteers will miss him greatly for his dedication and loyalty to our volunteering service and the trust.

We salute a true volunteering legend.
